Functions
The Government of Pakistan is encouraging exploitation of coal reserves for the development of power generation and other industrial use, keeping in view the following:
- Share of coal in countries energy mix is to be increased at least 19% by 2030 and50% by 2050.
- In Sindh estimated reserves of Thar coalfield are about 175 billion tons suitable for power generation. It is a cheap dependable power energy source and can meet Pakistan's energy requirement for centuries.
- Necessary infrastructure to support accessibility and availability of coal/lignite, which includes roads/transport, communication, water and energy utilities etc.
- Indigenous and free from uncertainty of fuel supply.
- To increase coal production 4 millions tons to 20 millions tons to 2015.
- Maximum utilization of coal resources to meet increasing demand of energy and local industry.
- Active participation of private sectors in coal based industries.
- Sustainable supply of energy through coal at competitive price to all sectors of economy.
- Mechanized mining of marble and granite.
